UP ATS Uncovers Major Illegal Conversion Racket Linked to Gulf Funds
The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has busted a large-scale illegal religious conversion network allegedly run by Jalaluddin, also known as Chhangur Baba, in Balrampur district., according to India Today.
He is accused of converting over 1,500 Hindu women and thousands of non-Muslims to Islam through threats and inducements, particularly targeting poor, widowed, and vulnerable individuals.
Investigations revealed his deep links across several Indian states and Gulf countries, with financial support reportedly flowing in through NRE-NRO accounts.
His operations, active in Mumbai’s Dargahs, were disguised under the sale of religious items. He also planned to establish Islamic centres to change local demographics.
The ATS, with IB and NIA support, is probing foreign funding and his widespread network. Arrested along with associate Neetu alias Nasreen, he allegedly bribed officials to shield his activities.
Previous arrests include his son Mehboob and aide Naveen, who is accused of land purchases using Dubai-based funds.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called the activities “anti-national”, and Chhangur’s house has been demolished.
