Lemur Music's "Fabulous Old Flatback" has a sound that is just amazing for a jazz studio bass or orchestra bass. Brought to LA about 30 years ago, it has been used in the pit and for recording pretty much continuously. We've done some restoration work to bring it into tip-top shape: The machines have been tightened and oiled and there are new pads, springs and locks on the Original Stenholm extension. The varnish has an elegant touchup. Exceptional attention has been paid to details in the setup, to bring out the most perfect sound possible. The bass has unusual tuning machines with brass keys welded to the iron worm, plus an Original Stenholm machine made by Bob Stenholm. It's a big bass with SPL of 42.5" -- not too long (!), an extended nut recently replaced by Lisa Gass insures a correctly playable "D-Neck." With a 22" upper bout, 28" lower bout, deep ribs, and a more sophisticated Flatback construction this large bass is easier to play than you might expect. And it certainly can deliver the powerful, deep fundamental, depth of tone, and mid-range clarity you need. "The Fabulous Old Flatback," ....That's what we want to hear!
