Описание к видео Understanding Electrical Faults: Types, Causes in electrical transmission and distribution networks.

Electrical faults represent unexpected deviations in the normal operation of a distribution system. These faults, caused by factors like short circuits, contact with animals, or environmental conditions, can lead to power outages, equipment damage, and safety risks. Understanding the nature of faults is essential for designing reliable systems and ensuring efficient operation.

1- Types of Electrical Faults

Three-phase faults occur when all three phases of the system short circuit, with or without grounding. These severe faults, often caused by lightning, equipment failure, or human error, result in high fault currents, power outages, and significant equipment damage.

Two-phase faults involve short circuits between two phases or a phase and neutral. Common causes include damaged insulation or external objects like trees. These faults, while less severe than three-phase faults, can still disrupt power and pose safety risks.

Single-phase faults occur when a single phase contacts the ground, creating homopolar currents limited by ground resistance. Though less disruptive, these faults can cause localized outages and safety concerns.

In low-voltage networks, a broken neutral conductor disrupts the system balance, causing some phases to experience high voltages while others drop. This imbalance can damage equipment and requires immediate intervention.

2- Classification of Electrical Faults in Power Systems

These faults are temporary and dissipate naturally, often caused by external conditions like wind-blown debris. They require no manual intervention or system resets.

Transient faults are short-lived and resolved by automatic protective mechanisms. Common examples include wildlife contact or temporary overvoltage due to lightning.

Semi-Permanent Faults: These faults, often caused by external factors like tree branches, resolve after one or two system resets, resulting in temporary outages.

Permanent faults involve physical damage to the system, such as severed cables or broken poles, requiring manual repairs and causing extended outages.

Evolutive faults start as minor issues, like insulation deterioration, and escalate into multi-phase faults. Prompt detection is essential to prevent widespread outages

Intermittent Faults: Triggered by periodic factors like swaying conductors or vibrating equipment, these faults cause recurring disruptions and require preventive measures like vegetation management.
