A low concrete wall adorned with early 20th century lampposts separates the grassy frontage space portion of the Denny Blaine Park from the parking lot. This area generally accommodates volleyball and picnics. The grassy strip is surrounded by a secondary eastern stonewall that designates where the shoreline once existed before 1917. The lake level was lowered nine feet by the construction of the Lake Washington Ship Canal.

On the water facing side beyond this stonewall is a sandy swatch of beach that is habitually enjoyed by sunbathers and particularly those embracing the clothing optional lifestyle. Although not legally sanctioned or monitored, the sunshine months attract a discreet but significant following. Ironically, Nirvana’s lead singer Kurt Cobain’s final residence and death site is merely one hillside block south of the park.

The Denny Blaine surrounding neighborhood is one of the most desirable within Seattle. It is wedged between the Washington Park and Madison Valley districts. The site is a short walking distance to the Madison Park, Leschi Beach and Madrona Village areas and an approximate 20-minute stroll into downtown.

The park was officially designated on April 15, 1901 from land donated to the city by Charles and Viretta Denny. Both were proponents of open space parks to be used by anyone in the city rather than restricting use to residents within a specific subdivision. Viretta Park is the site of the memorial bench that honors the memory of Kurt Cobain. It is located adjacent to his final house. Mourners and fans make pilgrimage visits to the site daily.

Denny Blaine Park seems far removed from the crowded nearby urban existence. The destination offers sweeping views of Lake Washington and the city of Bellevue in the distance.
