Dark Backgrounds in Graphite
As a wildlife artist I find that dark backgrounds can add drama to a picture and draw the focus to the main subject. In this video I show the process involved when starting a picture that is going to have a dark background as this differs from a normal white background as the picture will have to be built up with a lot more contrast. Starting with pencil for the main sketch of this Asiatic Lion Cub, a blending stump to add shape before moving on to creating the background with graphite powder and a makeup sponge.
