ON THE MAKING OF THE “5 O’CLOCK SHADOW” VIDEO:
“5 O’Clock Shadow,” the fourth single from Boys Club for Girls’ self-titled debut album (released March 24), means as much to the singer-songwriter duo of Amie Miriello and Vanessa Olivarez as anything they’ve recorded—either as band leaders or solo artists.
And the accompanying video, set for release on May 19 with a CMT premiere shortly thereafter, is a career highlight as well. Directed by husband-and-wife videography team Josh and Keturah Rae Bishop, the half-documentary/half-drama piece stars Nashville singer-songwriter Jessica Cayne and features a cast of sober-community members from around the Nashville area (including Old Crow Medicine Show co-founder Critter Fuqua). Their straightforward explanations of how they got into—and especially out of—the abyss of addiction are both hard-hitting and, ultimately, uplifting.
Olivarez says the song itself is as much about the emotional depths that follow any major life struggle as it is about addiction. “When 5 o’clock hits and you feel that sort of malaise coming over you, when everything just feels darker…sometimes you want to find a way to numb things. But it’s as much about loneliness and depression as it is about self-soothing, self-medicating, and the dangers behind that—what that can turn into.”
“As soon as Vanessa thought of the [video] idea,” Miriello says, “I got excited about it, but at the same time I knew it would be intense, to get people together who will hopefully relate and feel like they’re a part of the message. But our videographer happens to be sober and is a part of that community. He loved the concept and said ‘I have friends who would love to do this.’ And then my brother-in-law had another group he wanted to bring in, so it was two different groups who came together and all immediately felt like family to one another. It was beautiful to watch happen.”
"5 O'CLOCK SHADOW"
(3/11/19)
"An ode to the darkness inside us that inevitably creeps in most evening hours.
When we got together to write “5 O’Clock Shadow,” we were both knee-deep in the winter blues—the place we all go sometimes where it’s more difficult to get out of bed in the mornings, or to go to bed at night without…help. The help of unhealthy habits. Drinking every night and existing just to exist. Every person in the world knows someone or is someone who struggles with addiction. We felt it was important to create this song and video to let people know they are not alone."
Woke up drunk again
Pounding in my head
Like the day before
Passed out on the bed
Lipstick cigarettes
Evidence of war
How the hell am I supposed to live without
You’re the only thing that makes me feel right now
And I can’t let it go
Hold together everything I gotta hold
But I fall whenever I’m alone
And there you are again
Hello old friend
Oh, that’s my 5 o'clock shadow
Taking me down to the dark side of town, back to blue
Oh, that’s my 5 o'clock shadow
Spinning me ‘round and ‘round till there’s nothing I can do
But drown in you
Drown in you
Drag myself to work
Even when it hurts
Functional at best
No one ever asks
Wave as they walk past
That’s just life I guess
Oh, that’s my 5 o'clock shadow
Taking me down to the dark side of town, back to blue
Oh, that’s my 5 o'clock shadow
Spinning me ‘round and ‘round till there’s nothing I can do
But drown in you
Drown in you
The light, it hurts my eyes
So I paint it black
Used to burn so bright
Now I
I don’t shine at all
Oh, that’s my 5 o'clock shadow
Taking me down to the dark side of town, back to blue
Oh, that’s my 5 o'clock shadow
Spinning me ‘round and ‘round till there’s nothing I can do
But drown in you
Drown in you
Drown in you
Drown in you
