The Great Spotted Woodpecker is a striking bird found across the UK woodlands but not in Ireland. Known for its black, white, and red plumage, it feeds on insects, seeds, and occasionally the eggs of other birds. Its population has increased due to factors such as supplementary food from garden feeders. In the spring, these woodpeckers create nest holes by hammering out cavities. Over time, these holes are often used by other birds, such as tits and nuthatches, or they may eventually rot and develop into larger cavities that provide homes for Stock doves and owls.
