Haralahalli, a quiet village near Pandavapura in Karnataka, has turned into a hub for knowledge seekers—be it students, scholars, or writers. The credit goes to 75-year-old Anke Gowda, the man behind an extraordinary personal library that houses nearly two million books.

Gowda’s journey as a collector began when he was just 20, working as a bus conductor. His love for literature drove him to pursue a master’s degree in Kannada, after which he worked for nearly 30 years in a sugar factory. But unlike most, he spent the majority of his income on books. His dedication was so strong that he even sold off his property in Mysuru to grow his collection. Standing by his side through this journey have been his wife, Vijayalakshmi, and his son, Sagar.

“Students, researchers, even UPSC aspirants and Supreme Court judges come here to study. My library is open to all—there are no fees, no restrictions. Knowledge should be free,” Gowda shared in an interview with Mathrubhumi News.

What makes his treasure trove unique is the diversity it offers—about five lakh rare international titles and nearly 5,000 dictionaries across languages, making the collection priceless.
