The first auction, set for Sunday, will seek bids for 82 vehicles with a total starting price of around $1.5 million, Ricardo Rodriguez, head of the newly created Institute to Return Stolen Goods to the People, said at a news conference. Ahead of the auction, the cars were on display at the Los Pinos presidential mansion, which leftwing anti-corruption President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has refused to occupy as part of his vow of personal austerity while in office. 'The government used to be like a reverse Robin Hood, they stole from the people and gave to the rich,' said Rodriguez. 'But not anymore: now we're going to give back to the people, transparently. It's an honour to be able to participate.' 'We want this to turn into public works, hospitals, things that benefit marginalised areas of the country,' he said. The proceeds will go to two municipalities in the southern state of Oaxaca, which Lopez Obrador said are among the poorest in the country.
