East Fork Lake Backpacking - Steve Newman Worldwalker Perimeter Trail

Join me on a ~32 mile journey around East Fork Lake in Batavia, Ohio via the Steve Newman Worldwalker Perimeter Trail - Ohio's longest State Park hiking trail.

Steve Newman was born in 1954 in Bethel, Ohio and became known as the World Walker when he literally walked solo around the world from 1983 to 1987.

This trail has a bad reputation for its condition in some of the lower elevation sections, mainly from equestrian use. While it is definitely tough going in some areas, the trail as a whole is a wonderful experience and should be enjoyed!

There is evidence of human activity in the area dating back over 3,000 years, so this park is full of rich history if you keep your eyes open. Settlers were attracted to the area in the early 1800's and established grist mills, sawmills, blacksmith shops, tanneries, stagecoach depots, and even gold mines. You can find the rubble of old structures along your hike, especially on the southern side of the lake.
