Lady Jane Grey was England’s “Nine Days’ Queen,” crowned against her will after Edward VI’s death.
When Mary Tudor took the throne, Jane was charged with treason. She was led to the scaffold in the Tower of London on February 12, 1554.
Delaroche painted this nearly three centuries later — not to show politics, but the unbearable humanity of a moment where youth meets death.
