Q: 1: What is Galvanic cell? Or Voltaic Cell?
Ans: The electrochemical cell in which a spontaneous chemical reaction takes place and generates electric current is called galvanic cell or voltaic cell.
For example; Daniel cell.
Q: 2: Describe construction of Daniel cell.
Ans: A Daniel or galvanic cell consists of two half cells. Both are connected by a salt bridge. In each of the half cell an electrode is dipped in 1M solution of its own salt and connected through a wire to external circuit.

Q: 3: Describe working of Daniel cell?
Ans: The zinc metal has tendency to lose electrons more readily than copper.
So oxidation take place at zinc electrode and reduction take place at copper electrode.
Half cell reaction, Oxidation at anode.
Zn Zn+2 + 2e-
Half cell reaction, Reduction at cathode
Cu+2 + 2e- Cu
Overall reaction
Zn + Cu+2 Zn+2 + Cu

Test Yourself: 7.4

Q: vi: Which type of chemical reaction is taken place in electrolytic cell?
Ans: Non-spontaneous reaction takes place in electrolytic cell.
Q: vii: What type of reaction take place at anode in electrolytic cell?
Ans: Oxidation take place at at anode of electrolytic cell.
2Cl- Cl2 + 2e-
Q: viii: Why the positively charged electrode is called anode in electrolytic cell?
Ans: Removal of electrons is called oxidation. Positive charge is produced during this process. The electrode of electrolytic cell having positive charge is called anode.
Na Na+ + 1e-
Q: ix: In the electrolysis of water, towards. Which terminal H+ ions move?
Ans: In the electrolysis of water H+ ions move towards cathode.
Q: x: In the electrolysis of water, where is the oxygen produced.
Ans: In the electrolysis of water oxygen is produced at anode.
Q: xi: Towards which electrode of the electrolytic cell moves the cations and what do they do here?
Ans: Positive ions moving towards cathode are called cations. When they reached at cathode, they gain electrons and reduced.
Na+ + 1e- Na
Q: xii: How the half cells of a galvanic cell are connected? What is function of salt bridge?
Ans: Two half cells of galvanic cells are connected by salt bridge. It is way for migration of ions. The function of salt bridge is to maintain electrical neutrality between the two half cells of a galvanic cell.
Exercise Short Questions
Q: 10: Why does the anode carry negative charge in galvanic cell but positive charge in electrolytic cell? Justify with comments?
Ans: In galvanic cell electrons move from zinc electrode to copper electrode. As a result oxidation takes place at anode. Hence anode carries negative charge. On the other hand in electrolytic cell anode is connected with positive terminal of battery hence it carry positive charge.
Q: 11: Where do the electrons flow from zinc electrode in Daniel’s cell?
Ans: In Daniel’s cell electrons flow from zinc electrode to copper electrodes. Daniel’s cell is example of galvanic cell.
Q: 12: Why do electrodes get their names anode and cathode in galvanic cell?
Ans: In galvanic cell oxidation take place at anode and reduction take place at cathode.
Q: 13: What happens at cathode in a galvanic cell?
Ans: Reduction takes place at cathode in a galvanic cell.
