Overview & History
Name & Meaning: “Souq Waqif” means “standing market” in Arabic. The name refers to how vendors used to stand (set up stalls) even when the low-lying land or flooding from the nearby water would partially submerge parts of the marketplace.

Origins: The market dates back approximately a couple of centuries (~250 years old), functioning originally as a place where Bedouin and rural people would bring animals (goats, sheep), wool, milk etc., to trade or barter for everyday goods.

Decline & Restoration: It fell into disrepair by the late 20th century, including a destructive fire in 2003. Then, a major restoration project (2004-2008) revived it, reconstructing shops, alleys, using traditional materials and architecture to preserve the heritage feel.

Architecture & Layout
Traditional Style: Restored using Qatari architectural techniques: mud render surfaces, exposed wooden beams, use of dangeal wood and bamboo, and roofs with clay/straw layers to help with insulation. These evoke the old Arabian souq styles.

Narrow Corridors / Alleyways: The souq is a labyrinth of winding alleys. Small shops line them, often crowded, with items spilling out into walkways etc. Gives it a lively, bustling feel.

Proximity to Water / Doha Corniche: Originally souq was right on the shore (along Doha Bay), allowing access by boat. Over time, land reclamation shifted the shoreline. Now there’s roads and promenade between the souq and the water (Corniche).
