This is a capture of me and a friend playing the 2P Vs. mode of Wave Race 64 for the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator and was not played on the Wii U Virtual Console. This footage was recorded directly from Keet’s Nintendo 64 using an actual Wave Race 64 cartridge. I’m player one and Keet is player two.

While I was visiting Keet in Florida, we also managed to record the competitive multiplayer modes from some Nintendo 64 games, including Wave Race 64. Keet actually played this game back in the day around 1997-1998, but to my knowledge, he had not played the game since then. I probably had not played the game in about 5 years. I brought my copy of Wave Race 64 since Keet doesn’t own it yet, and we did approximately 30 minutes of warm up while testing various settings.

At first Keet tried using Ayumi Stewart, but we quickly found that her top speed lagged significantly behind Ryota Hayami’s, even after I adjusted my custom settings to lower his top speed. Keet also tried Dave Mariner, but he was overly sensitive. We then tried enabling the handicap setting, but that simply ended up being ridiculous because the game would cause you to immediately catch up to the other person, leading to constant and unwarranted neck-and-neck racing.

After some additional practice, we finally settled on having Keet simply use Ryota Hayami with the same custom settings as me. This made for balanced racing between us.

Considering that Keet had not played this game since the late ’90s and only had 30 minutes of practice, he did absolutely amazing here. I could not have hoped for a better match up, and I do not personally know a single other person who could put up a good fight in this game. Although I generally went all out here, I screwed up a back flip on Twilight City by failing to properly register the up input on the stick, which turned me completely around. Aside from that, all of my mistakes were basically unrelated to screwing around.

My only complaint, however, is that I forgot to adjust the brightness settings on my capture card before recording this footage, so it’s a little darker than it should be. My other N64 footage doesn’t have this problem though. Also, we played on Keet’s HDTV, which has some input lag with old systems, but we didn’t notice it too much in this game.

For this competition, we completed all 8 courses on the Expert setting.

Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR 2 and the official N64 S-video cable. We’re using standard N64 controllers.
