For clarification on the compost toilet, when I say “dump the solids bin”, I mean dumping it into a trash bag and then into a waste bin/dumpster OR burying it underground. It’s also pretty heavy and bulky and just not the easiest to handle.

My driving reason for the switch is the discretion that a dry flush toilet offers, but it is nice that I won’t have to cut a hole in the floor of the van to ventilate a compost toilet.

I’ll also save a lot of time since the dry flush toilet doesn’t need to be cleaned out (since everything is contained in a waste bag already) and I don’t need to spend an evening prepping coconut coir for a compost bin (it takes forever to soften from a dry brick to a soft soil).

That said, I do feel a bit guilty for the additional use of plastic, so I’m not opposed to switching back to a compost toilet down the road (no pun intended), but I want to make sure it makes sense with my needs and lifestyle first.
