Geography and Demography
Burkina Faso is a landlocked country located in West Africa. It is bordered by six countries: Mali to the north and west, Niger to the east, Benin to the southeast, Togo and Ghana to the south, and Côte d’Ivoire to the southwest. The country covers an area of approximately 274,200 square kilometers, making it slightly larger than the United Kingdom.
The terrain is mostly flat with undulating plains and gentle hills, particularly in the southwest where the highest point, Mount Ténakourou (749 meters), is located. The country lies entirely within the Sahel region, which transitions from the Sahara Desert in the north to the savannas in the south
Burkina Faso has a tropical climate with two main seasons: a dry season (November to May) dominated by the harmattan winds, and a rainy season (June to October). Rainfall is highest in the south, while the north remains arid and prone to drought.
Burkina Faso has a population of approximately 24 million people as of 2025. The population density is around 88 people per square kilometer, with most citizens living in rural areas. The country is ethnically diverse, with over 60 ethnic groups. The largest group is the Mossi, making up about 40% of the population. Other major groups include the Fulani (Peulh), Gurunsi, Bobo, Lobi, and Senoufo. Despite this diversity, Burkina Faso maintains a strong sense of national identity, with French as the official language and Mooré, Dioula, and Fula widely spoken.
On the other hand, Mali is a vast, landlocked country in West Africa, bordered by seven countries: Algeria to the north, Niger to the east, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire to the south, Guinea to the southwest, and Senegal and Mauritania to the west. It is the eighth-largest country in Africa, covering an area of about 1,240,000 square kilometers, which is more than twice the size of France.
Geographically, Mali is divided into three main zones: the arid Sahara Desert in the north, the semi-arid Sahel in the central region, and the more fertile Sudanian savanna in the south. The Niger River, which flows in a great arc through southern and central Mali, is the country’s most important geographic and economic feature.
Mali has a hot, dry climate in the north with extreme desert conditions, while the south experiences a tropical savanna climate with a distinct rainy season from June to September.
Mali has an estimated population of around 23 million people as of 2025. With a land area of 1,240,000 square kilometers, the country has a low population density of approximately 18 people per square kilometer, with most people concentrated in the southern regions near the Niger River. Mali is ethnically diverse, comprising several major groups including the Bambara (the largest), Fulani (Peul), Senufo, Dogon, Tuareg, Songhai, and Malinké. Each group has its own language, culture, and traditions. The majority of the population practices Islam, and Mali’s society remains largely rural and dependent on agriculture and livestock.
To conclude for his round, Mali is significantly larger than Burkina Faso, covering about 1,240,000 km² compared to Burkina Faso's 274,200 km². In terms of climate, Burkina Faso has a slightly more favorable climate, especially in the south, with more consistent rainfall. Mali’s vast north is arid desert, making much of it less habitable. So for this round Burkina faso wins with a better climate.
Economy.
Burkina Faso’s economy is primarily based on agriculture and mining, with the majority of its population engaged in subsistence farming. Agriculture contributes around 20% of GDP and employs nearly 80% of the workforce, with main crops including sorghum, millet, maize, and cotton. Cotton is the most important cash crop and a significant export item.
The mining sector, especially gold mining, is the country's economic backbone. Gold accounts for over 70% of export earnings, making Burkina Faso one of the top gold producers in Africa.
