Saltley Viaduct

Located approximately 3.2 km northeast of Birmingham city centre, the Saltley Viaduct is designed to replace the existing B4114 bridge. This new structure will span the HS2 line, the Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal, the Birmingham and Derby rail line, and the River Rea, facilitating access to the city centre and the districts of Nechells and Alum Rock.

The viaduct’s construction involves assembling steel deck segments off-site to minimize on-site disruption. Piers will be constructed first, followed by the transportation and installation of the steel deck. Design considerations include a 4-metre-wide pedestrian and cyclist pathway, integrated LED lighting to enhance safety while minimizing light pollution, and weathering steel panels with perforations for visual interest.

Aston Church Road Overbridge

The Aston Church Road Overbridge, situated in Birmingham’s Washwood Heath area, is being reconstructed to accommodate the HS2 line beneath it. The existing bridge lacked sufficient clearance for the high-speed trains, necessitating its replacement.

The new bridge, measuring 84 metres in length and 21 metres in width, was constructed off-site and moved into position in August 2024. This method reduced the impact on local traffic and rail services. The bridge features a concrete deck over steel girders, with glass-reinforced plastic panels serving as permanent formwork. Design enhancements, influenced by community feedback, include wider walkways for pedestrians and cyclists, improved LED lighting to ensure safety while protecting local wildlife, and the use of weathered steel panels for aesthetic appeal.

Construction commenced in October 2024, with the road closed to motorized traffic for approximately 14 months. Pedestrian and cyclist access remains available during this period.

Both structures are integral to the HS2 project, aiming to enhance transportation infrastructure while incorporating community feedback and environmental considerations.
