Deep in the Alabama woodlands, a first of many mountain peaks begins. Wide Loblolly stands blend in with stately Oaks, Hickories, and Maples. They cover these ancient peaks with their seasonal leaves, year in and year out.

While this peak isn’t five to six thousand feet in elevation like those in the Great Smoky Mountains, this peak stands proudly as the “Beginning of the Appalachians.” Only this Alabama mountain can stake that claim.

Flagg Mountain is the first thousand foot mountain in the Appalachian mountain chain and holds a certain energy that can’t be explained, but has to be felt.

It is also the home to a unique fifty foot CCC-era fire tower built in 1935.

Most notably, the Pinhoti Trail begins near the base of the mountain, where one can ascend past the fire tower on a challenging, yet rewarding long distance journey.

The Pinhoti National Recreation Trail ( a Millennium Legacy Trail ) is a premier southern Appalachian long distance hiking trail and is also a southeast region Appalachian Trail connector. The total distance of the trail is 337.1 miles. There are 170.7 miles in Alabama and 166.4 miles in Georgia, which makes the Pinhoti the longest hiking trail in either state.

The Pinhoti's southern terminus is in east central Alabama at Flagg Mountain, just southwest of the town of Weogufka.

​The Pinhoti's northern terminus is in northwest Georgia, just west of the town of Blue Ridge, where it intersects with the Benton MacKaye Trail. Hiking east on the BMT for an additional 72.3 miles will put you at Springer Mountain, the southern terminus of the granddaddy of all trails, the Appalachian Trail.

So grab your backpack, tent, & provisions to start your northbound hike of the Pinhoti Trail at the “Beginning of the Appalachians.”
