The DELTIC 55019 was at the Epping and Ongar Railway (EOR) on Friday 16th Sept 2016 for a diesel weekend event. This massive engine is sure to be a major attraction but I went on the Friday whilst it was raining in the hope I could more easily get a cab ride, and I did. There were fewer people there.

So there are a few raindrops on the lens at times but the advantage was fewer people in the way of the shots, and choice of camera positions at the nearest windows in the coaches.

The cab ride was fantastic, and so was hearing that Napier Deltic Engine sound. It did sound strange as it struggled for traction (uphill I presume) on the wet rails. Once it got going it was a breeze and I could imagine it doing 100mph.

It is a fantastic locomotive, and this Type 55 and the DP1 prototype (especially) are my favourite diesels. The Cab was not as roomy as I was expecting, although still great.

The Driver for Royal Highland Fusilier was from the Deltic Preservation Society, the Pilot was a regular EOR driver and had track knowledge, and the lady was in the position of Secondman. Cost today for a cab ride was twice the normal cost but still a bargain I thought at £10. A ticket for the day was £18.

My camera defaulted to 4:3 format, hence it was filmed and then edited this way. Sorry for the occasional raindrop but this is a hazard when filming quickly and in the rain (it was drizzling all day). My tiny monitor means I cannot always notice. I decided to hand-hold as well for ease of movement around the cab, plus that meant I could have an umbrella rather than a tripod to carry.

There were many other diesels there but I did not film those, as my focus was on the Deltic today. Check out the Epping and Ongar Railway website for details of the weekend of Sept 16-18 2016.
