Why We Roll, the TTRPG design podcast by the Stillfleet Studio, is a streaming show and podcast about designing tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) hosted by Christopher Pickett (Danse Macabre: Medieval Horror Roleplaying) and Wythe Marschall (Stillfleet, PICARO!).
Chris and Wythe host in-depth conversations with professional game designers and other relevant experts on contemporary indie TTRPGs (writers, artists, graphic and layout artists, voice talent, and others). Why We Roll focuses on designers who share a broadly Leftist ideological bent. The hosts occasionally run actual-play sessions and offer behind-the-scenes looks at the games they’re developing.
Why We Roll is fun and practical in tone, combining the benefits of an informal professional chat with an advice show. Chris and Wythe are to TTRPGs what Click and Clack are to cars: passionate, funny, knowledgeable but always excited to learn. The hosts take a sensitive, curious, ecumenical approach to game design, informed by years of work on their own games.
Topics covered to date include game-design inspirations and best practices, the politics of games, narrative structures, illustrating game concepts, GMing, cards as mechanics, game conventions, games and education, eco-catastrophes, epic powers and “boss fights,” espionage in games, faction rules, genres, “medieval” settings, hit points versus wounds, “madness” rules, safety at the table, solo RPGs, the OSR and NSR, what makes a game a game, what makes a system a system, the business of indie RPGs, and so much more!
Through the show, Chris and Wythe hope to amplify new creative voices, connect with leading indie designers, and work through a range of mechanical and narrative questions that are pertinent to many designers, players, and GMs. Why We Roll is both entertainment and part of a longstanding tradition of “showing our homework” in the indie TTRPG community. We showcase of fresh and even challenging ideas about what makes imagination-based games so powerful.
Why We Roll is (usually) recorded in Brooklyn and Queens.
