I started off playing guitar and then, after many years, eventually picked up the mandolin (at the insistence of my band members!). I don't think I'm the only person that has made this transition. As I was becoming more familiar with the mandolin, I was surprised as to how just how different it is from playing guitar.

There are the obvious things (like the size, the tuning, and the double-strings), but there are so many more subtle differences that I didn't know beforehand. I find that, in a band setting, the mandolin can be played as either a percussive or a melodic instrument. The percussive element of the mandolin can be seen in bluegrass group where there are no drums present. However, it is the melodic potential of the instrument (particularly when doing countermelodies against a vocal line) that really attracts me to the mandolin.

I try to highlight some of these differences in this video, however, the best way to find out is to try it yourself! If you're a guitarist that has an opportunity to pick up a mandolin, I highly recommend that you do! You'll hopefully fall in love with this little instrument, just like I have. And if you don't, you'll undoubtedly gain a new perspective when going back to guitar.
