"A dust-covered 1986 Ford Sierra Cosworth that was parked in a barn 31 years ago by its ‘playboy’ owner has sold for £60,000.

The late owner of the classic ‘Boy Racer’ motor, a charismatic second-hand car dealer named Tony, drove it around his hometown for five years, apparently impressing ‘the ladies’ with it.

But he became disheartened after a botched attempt to steal the flash car in 1991 left it damaged.
He put the 1986 RS Cosworth into storage where it remained in a time-capsule condition for the next three decades.

The owner died earlier this year and the silver motor, which has a huge spoiler on the back, was left to his daughter who recalled being driven to school in it in the late 1980s.

She found it still with its tax discs for 1990 and 1991 and a dated copy of Autocar & Motor magazine in the boot.

She decided to sell the Cosworth through Barry Hawkins Auctioneers, of Downham Market, Norfolk.

Despite its filthy and damaged appearance, the car was able to command a sale price of £59,000 due to it being in original condition and with a mileage of just 32,000.

Auctioneer Robert George said: 'This car was a bit of an urban legend in the village where Tony lived. He was known as a bit of a ladies man and this car was all part of the look.

'This car must have caused quite a stir at the time.

'But in the late summer of 1991 an attempt was made to steal the car. During this break-in, the RS Cosworth was started, moved and damaged within minutes of the attempted theft. 'Despite only relatively minor damage, the owner lost heart and drove it into the barn where it remained untouched until recently.

'It looks tired and dirty but there is no rust or corrosion and the damage from the 1991 incident is only minor.

'At no point has an insurance claim been made on the car.

'These cars were thrashed and trashed so the sale of a very, very original Ford Sierra Codworth with low mileage represented a rare opportunity.'

According to the auction house, it will take a minimum amount of work to restore the motor to its former glory.

The three door car has a two litre engine, giving it a top speed of 150mph and 200bhp that propelled it from 0-60mph in under seven seconds."
