Abashiri Prison in the Hokkaido Prefecture of Japan opened during the Meiji era in 1890.
It was one of the new prisons built to accomodate the growing number of criminals following the abolition of the death penalty in 1882.
In winter it is a bitterly cold place, with the local lake freezing over and thick fog regularly engulfing the area.
In its entire history, only one man has ever escaped- --- and that was Yoshie Shiratori .
