Day 1 Camino Frances Climbing the Pyrenees from France into Spain | Hike the Camino

Описание к видео Day 1 Camino Frances Climbing the Pyrenees from France into Spain | Hike the Camino

The first day of the Camino Francés from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Roncesvalles is a demanding but unforgettable stage, covering approximately 24-27 kilometers across the Pyrenees. Starting in the quaint French town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, pilgrims begin a steep ascent, gaining around 1,200 meters of elevation as they cross into Spain. The Route Napoléon is the most popular path, known for its stunning panoramic views of the Pyrenean mountains and lush valleys, though it’s also physically challenging, especially for those new to long-distance walking.

The climb begins immediately after leaving Saint-Jean, with the first rest stop at Orisson, about 8 kilometers in. Many pilgrims pause here to refuel and take in the breathtaking views of the Basque countryside. From Orisson, the trail becomes steeper, passing through rugged landscapes and scattered farms. One of the route’s highlights is reaching the Col de Lepoeder, the highest point of the day at 1,450 meters, where pilgrims are rewarded with expansive views over the valleys below.

The descent into Roncesvalles is steep and can be tough on the knees, but there is also an option for a longer, gentler forest route. Pilgrims finally arrive at Roncesvalles, a small hamlet with an ancient monastery that has welcomed pilgrims for centuries. Here, the Collegiate Church of Santa María and the large pilgrim hostel offer both rest and reflection after the challenging day.

This first stage is known for its physical difficulty but also for its beauty and sense of accomplishment. Pilgrims experience a range of landscapes, from pastoral valleys to rugged mountain paths, while taking in the fresh mountain air and peaceful surroundings. With a walking time of 7-10 hours, this day sets the tone for the Camino ahead, blending physical endurance with spiritual reflection in a stunning natural setting.
