Canadian members of Parliament met Monday night for a debate about the situation on Ukraine's border, as tensions with Russia mount.

The emergency debate comes as Canadian Armed Forces stationed in Ukraine move further away from the Russian border.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Russia will face “severe costs and serious consequences,” such as the imposition of co-ordinated sanctions, if it continues its incursion against Ukraine. He reiterated Canada’s stance in supporting Ukraine in the standoff.

When asked why Canada has not provided Ukraine with lethal weaponry amid the rising tensions, Trudeau said the “number one ask” from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was economic support. He added Canada delivered this in a $120-million sovereign loan to “help them counter the economic destabilization that Russia is engaging in.”

Earlier, Canada's National Defence Minister Anita Anand has said soldiers are moving west of the Dnieper River – which splits Ukraine – "out of an abundance of caution." A possible Russian military incursion could try to incorporate land on the east side of the river.
