Sulekhan 2021: Celebrating Indian Calligraphy.

Typography Society of India tied up with prominent Indian and international organisations to host Sulekhan 2021, a one-day online event to celebrate Indian Calligraphy on the occasion of World Calligraphy Day on August 11, 2021. The event was streamed live on Hasgeek.com. and Hasgeek channels in YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.
The program was organised by a committee led by Prof G.V. Sreekumar comprising of Narayana Bhattathiri, George K. Paul, Hiral Bhagat, Dilbag Singh and Prajwal Xavier.
World Calligraphy Day is celebrated on the second Wednesday of August every year to promote the art of calligraphy.
Sulekhan 2021 was inaugurated by renowned calligrapher, Achyut Palav, and the keynote address was delivered by veteran calligrapher, Parameshwara Raju. A video directed by Narayana Bhatthathiri featuring hundred Indian and international calligraphers writing the first letter of different scripts was premiered during the event.
Among other highlights of the day, an AV dedication for Independence Day created by Achyut Palav featuring calligraphers expressing the word, ‘Jai Hind’, in different Indian languages was premiered during the event. This was followed by calligraphy demonstrations by noted calligraphers Narayana Bhatthathiri, Achyut Palav, Inku Kumar and Dilbag Singh.
The event concluded with a panel discussion on ‘Calligraphy - education and practice’. Panellists included Achyut Palav, Prof G V Sreekumar, Prof Santosh Kshirsagar, Prof Tarun Deep Girdher, Hiral Bhagat and Narayana Bhattathiri. The panel was moderated by Akshaya Thombre. Hiral Bhagat gave the Vote of Thanks. Typography Society is planning to organise a three day conference with Calligraphy research paper presentations as well as workshops and demonstration next year.
