Thousands of demonstrators have taken to Rome's streets protesting a number of issues as well as the government's austerity programme.

Organisers were expecting upward of 20,000 protesters including those opposing a proposed high speed rail line linking the French city of Lyon with Turin.

One demonstrator appeared to be openly hoping for clashes with police, saying, "I think we need some today. We are not assuming it is going to happen, but we need them because the situation in the country is very serious."

Yesterday 14 people were detained, when police confiscated baseball bats, a knife and helmets.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 police were deployed and several shops were shuttered in case of violence.

After a transport strike on Friday, a number of demonstrators camped out overnight in the centre of the city and, despite their grievances, seemed in good spirits.
