Most of the endemic plants to the Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands bloom sober white flowers. However, Munin-futomomo (Metrosideros boninensis) blooms with the beautiful red flowers that stand out in the blue sky of summer.
Warbling white-eye, endemic carpenter bees and honeybees come in search of nectar from the flowers.

It is protected and designated as a “National Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” under the Law for the Conservation of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora issued in 2004. In the same year, a conservation and breeding business plan (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ministry of the Environment) was formulated.
In addition, as a project of the Ministry of the Environment, the propagation of seedlings, the growth test in the natural habitat, and the prevention of feral goats intrusion fence are installed to prevent extinction in the natural habitat.
