You may have heard the saying, “addiction is a family disease”.

You will hear this saying a lot in the recovery community because it is true.

Addiction IS a family disease and unfortunately, most families have at least one person in it that suffers.

But when a person enters into treatment, their family may not realize how important it is for them to participate in the treatment process.

Participation is important because addiction affects the entire family dynamic and has far-reaching effects on everyone involved.

Families sometimes mistakenly believe that once their loved one is enrolled in treatment; the problems are over.

Without being educated and learning about the disease of addiction, families likely are destined to continue established unhealthy boundaries once their loved one gets out of treatment.


No family is perfect, but families with addiction problems tend to have a lot of issues to overcome – even if it’s just one family member who is suffering.


For example, many families who are dealing with addiction have serious communication problems.


Positive family involvement in treatment and recovery helps to address these communication problems.


Families participating in their loved one’s treatment will get the guidance they need to learn a new way of communicating with and relating to their loved one.


Often, those who struggle with addiction manipulate the people around them.

If any family unit wants a good chance at long-term recovery for their loved one, they must learn what these manipulation tactics are.

They must also learn the behaviors that have contributed to their loved one’s ongoing addiction so that they can make a change.

Active involvement of family members also helps each loved one enter their own journey of recovery.

Families need healing as well.

During residential treatment at recovery in motion, patients usually spend 90 days in our treatment program.

While this time away may feel like a much-needed break for the family, it is critical that they get involved in their loved one’s treatment.

During time away from their families, our patients are out of the environment that was likely toxic, codependent, and enabling.

This time away helps them stay focused on their recovery in a new therapeutic environment.

Our patient’s family and friends are also provided with time to reflect and better understand the role they play in the situation.

Even though treatment is in a residential setting at recovery in motion, we still have programs for family and friends to attend and we allow visitation on weekend passes.

The family participation program includes educational programs, recovery workshops, and other sessions designed specifically for the family unit.

Our goal is to help heal everyone involved and provide much-needed emotional support during the highly stressful time of early treatment and recovery.
