Seokbinggo is ice storage.
The gate in the south has access to stairs leading to the floor.
When going inside, the floor is slanted to allow water to drain. An oval-shaped roof and three holes serve to circulate fresh air.
A stone monument records that Jo Myeong-gyeom, a county magistrate, converted this wooden icehouse into a stone one in the 1738 during the Joseon Dynasty. It is considered as a masterpiece in terms of its size and construction technique.
Wolseong Palace Site The Silla Kingdom, is called Banwolseong or Sinwolseong after its crescent shaped fortress, and is also known as Jaesong, where the king resides. According to Samguk Sagi ("History of the Three Kingdoms"), this fortress was built in the A.D. 101, and the king moved in to live there from Geumseong (Gyeongju). It was the royal palace of Silla kings of generations past. During King Munmu's reign, when Donggung Palace, Wolji Pond, Imhaejeon Hall, and Cheomseongdae Observatory were incorporated, the size of the fortress was expanded.
The fortress had heaps of soil and stones formed to the east, west, and north and had a natural topography of cliffs to the south. Under the fortress, the defense facility of haeja is artificially built so that water flows, and to the east, there remains a gate leading to Gyeongju Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond.
Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond They were the secondary palace site.
Alter Silla unified the Three kingdoms, a large pond was dug, where three islands were constructed at the center and 12 mountain peaks were built to the north and east in the A.D. 674. The pond also had beautiful flowers, trees, rare birds and animals.
Established in A.D. 679, Donggung was the banquet site for important national events and important visitors. This is also a palace where, after the invasion of Gyeonhwon, King Gyeongsun held a reception for Wang Geon to request help. Samguk Sagi had only a record of Imhaejeon Pavilion, but Donggungnyeoji-seungnam("Augmented Survey of the Geography of Korea") of the Joseon period recorded that "To the west of Anapji is the site of Imhaejeon Pavilion." The current site is presumedly the location of Donggung and Wolji. Hoerang (corridor area) and 26 other building sites were found around Wolji, among which three building sites of the five ones of the Silla Kingdom at the west of the pond, Donggung and Wolji (Anapji) were restored in the 1980s and remain to the present day.
Here relics were excavated, among which flower-patterned bricks with the inscription, "The second year of Joro (680)" indicate the construction of Imhaejeon Pavilion during King Munmu' reign. Although Imhaejeon Pavilion was a part of a secondary palace. it seems to have played a significant role. Many bowls and plates were excavated, and they seem to have been used for dairy life.
Cheomseongdae Observatory It built during the reign of Queen Seondeok (r.632-647), is the oldest astronomical observatory in Asia. This observatory is a valuable cultural heritage showing the high scientific development of that time. An old record states, "People can climb up through its middle."
It seems that one placed a ladder on its outside, entered inside through a window, and climbed up to the top via another ladder to observe the stars. Astronomy was deeply related to agricultures as farming times can be determined according to the movements of the stars. It was also deeply related to politics in that the horoscope was considered to be important in the ancient nation, since the good or bad fortune of a nation could be predicted according to the results of their observation of the stars.
