How To Make A Home Safe For Elderly Parents - Safety Ideas For Seniors

Below are links to products and information mentioned in this video. These recommendations and safety ideas for seniors are generalized because I don't know the exact physical / mental capabilities that your senior loved one has.

1) Monitoring:
a) Alexa's Echo Show - allow you to check in on Mom or Dad visually. The free skill that you would install is called Drop In - you can read more about that here: https://seniorsafetyadvice.com/echo-s...

b) There are other Alexa products as well:

c) A security camera like the Blurams:

d) If you just want an audio type of thing you can use any baby monitor - just make sure it can work throughout the home - from the lower levels to the upper levels.

e) There are also several types of motion detectors that may help you:

f) If your parent is willing to wear a medical alert device, there are multiple choices and the Invisawear one is not as "medical looking" as others - https://seniorsafetyadvice.com/recomm...

g) Check out other types of medical alert devices in our guide:

h) A smart watch like the GPS Enabled Watch from Apple also has a fall detection feature: https://seniorsafetyadvice.com/recomm...

I personally think that the Echo Show product coupled with a motion sensor product would be the best option for most seniors.

The things to know when deciding on using an Alexa product...
Can your parent remember how to use it?
Can they remember TO use it?

2) Stairs - the recommendations I'm giving here are general because I don't know your parent's physical capabilities. Just know that their physical condition may decline (or it may not) so you may have to adjust as time goes by.

The most expensive option for stairs is a stair lift - but hopefully you will not have to get to that point.

Otherwise, there are multiple things that you can do to make those stairs as safe and easy for a parent as possible...

a) If the steps are wooden or tiled, you want to make them as anti slip as possible. No need to change the flooring, there are products that you can put on the existing flooring to make them less slippery: https://seniorsafetyadvice.com/recomm...

b) If the steps are carpeted, make sure that the carpeting is low pile and that it's not loose. Read more: https://seniorsafetyadvice.com/are-ca...

c) Handrails on both sides of the stairs, if possible. There are also products like this StairAIDl:    • StairAID - A Stair Mobility Aid

d) Lighting - Motion activated lighting or using an Alexa device to turn the lights on and off. Your parent can do that with their voice:

The are several YouTube videos where motion activated LED lights were installed on stairs:

3) Fall Prevention - there are many things that you can do to "senior proof" your home for your parent:
