How does a bastard, orphan, son of a virgin grow up to be the…son of God?! Do you remember that line from Hamilton? What about the one “Stop running from God, Alexander…His word says if we confess our sins, he is faithful and [wants] just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us.” We don’t either!

It came to light this past week that a church in McAllen, Texas, called The Door Christian Fellowship Ministries, has been putting on its own version of the Pulitzer Prize winning musical Hamilton that’s quite a bit different from the original. This Christian Hamilton played Mad Libs with the original musical’s lyrics and replaced everything they could with something Christian. Shockingly, the pastor of the church has even been ending the musical with some homophobic preaching.

Once the Hamilton creators found out about the production, the church was sent a cease and desist and weighed further action: “Hamilton does not grant amateur or professional licenses for any stage productions and did not grant one to The Door Church. We issued a cease-and-desist letter… The Hamilton family stands for tolerance, compassion, inclusivity and certainly LGBTQ+ rights. We are in the process of reviewing the unauthorized changes made to the script to determine further action.” But still this church was not throwing away its shot.
