A switch with all its ports placed in Forwarding state that switch is root bridge.
Designated Port: A non-root port, which is forwarding away from the root switch, and has the lowest cost . is called the designated port.
Cost- A port cost is defined by the speed at which the port operates.

The ports on a switch with enabled Spanning Tree Protocol are the following port states.

Disable
Listening
Learning
Forwarding

CST ( Common Spanning tree protocol )
PVST ( Per VLAN spanning tree protocol)
