Okay, so I have noticed the majority of people coming to my channel are looking for tips on the instagram front. If you’ve been a subscriber of mine for a while you’ll know my feelings towards the platform, and that actually I’m trying to focus efforts elsewhere! So, fair warning if you’re getting into instapoetry for exposure and glory prepare yourself, because it’s harder now than ever.
Anyway, now I have that small disclaimer out of the way, instagram and the instapoetry community have evolved and there are definitely some strong dos and donts that come along with it! Here are the most important ones I feel are vital to making a success on the platform.
First don’t: Follow pages just to get people to look at your page and follow you back (also known as follow for follow) If you’re going to pop up in my notifications with just a follow, I’m not going feel inclined to check out your profile. The community on instagram as a whole has caught on to this strategy and if you’re not leaving some likes and a meaningful comment or two, people are just going to assume you’re not legit. We have evolved ourselves as social media users and have now got this sixth sense.
Which brings me onto our first do! Be human. Only engage with pages and creators you like, so that you can have meaningful interactions. Be a human and leave engaging comments. A comment saying “This is really great,” with some emoji at the end is just going to be ignored and assumed as botted, and if anything you’re going to LOSE respect on the platform. SO BE A HUMAN.
Don’t 2: Don’t tag other creators in your posts expecting to use their profiles as advertisement. It doesn’t work, and just ends up insulting your fellow poet, earning you some bad street cred. If the page your tagging is a page solely made to share other poet’s work, that’s totally fine, they WANT you to tag them. But if your randomly tagging other bigger creators in your post, just so your work will appear in their “photos of page”, again… you’re just going to upset people.
Do: Be conscious of your page’s design. If you want to be taken seriously as an ‘instapoet’ you have to show the world that YOU’RE taking it seriously too. In my other video on how to write for instagram I go into more depth about graphic design, but spend the time to curate your posts and designing them too! It goes a long way.
Don’t: Ignore your followers! If people are taking the time to comment and like your work, and follow your journey, the least you owe them is your time to reply and appreciate their efforts! If you’re getting like, I don’t know maybe 50 comments a post… or even 100 comments a post, but only post twice a week say, I may be a madman but I still think you can find 30minutes to an hour in a day to respond in some way to show you appreciate the love people are sharing with you. Even if it’s just a like that takes half a second!
Lastly, do make sure you’re keeping things fresh! I’ve seen pages posting the same poem every other week! So if you plan to be posting every day, or if you plan to post frequently. It’s okay to repost a poem that’s been received particularly well, but make sure you have a back log of I’d say at the very least 30 poems… but I’d recommend more around the 100 mark before you get going!
So 3 dos and 3 don’ts! There’s so many things to consider with instagram algorithm too, but I’m not here as a social media guru, there are more than enough videos on youtube for that, but hopefully if you take these dos and don’ts into consideration you’ll be able to fully integrate yourself into the community and start making new friends immediately! Remember that although of course you need to be posting poems that people can enjoy and relate to, instagram is massively saturated now and just because you’re not seeing the results you want, that does not mean your work is no good! Try to keep a clear head in that respect… I know the doubts and insecurities of an artist… trust me. See you next week!
