KEF's LS50 loudspeaker was originally released in May 2012. It went on to be one of the most successful loudspeakers of the last two decades in terms of sales – and is now considered by many to be a "classic."

On September 22, 2020, KEF released the LS50 Meta loudspeaker, with new finishes, improvements to the Uni-Q driver array, and what's described as its "killer feature" – a metamaterial-based acoustic absorber. The absorber is a small disc mounted to the backside of the driver's motor that’s claimed to absorb almost 100% of sound from the backside of the tweeter's dome. The result is said to be cleaner midrange and high frequencies.

In this video, lead designers Dr. Jack Oclee-Brown and Dr. ‪Sébastien Degraeve‬ describe what a metamaterial is and explain exactly how it was implemented into the new LS50 Meta – the first KEF loudspeaker with this technology.
