Taft Waterfront Park is located at the southern end of Lincoln City. This park is a good parking area to start from when hiking this section. We met at Depoe Bay in the morning and were the first ones to park along the seawall. We then took my car and drove back up to the Taft Waterfront Park and hiked back.

This is a very scenic section of the OCT. A number of rugged basalt headlands jut out into the ocean, creating a rugged coastline that is especially beautiful in the winter when the big waves come crashing up against them.

After the first section where the trail follows the road, it finally reaches the beach. Once back up off the beach, the trail winds alongside parts of highway 101. These side trails are great for keeping hikers off the road shoulder.

Gleneden Beach is very unique. The sand grains are really large and your feet sink in similar to pumice. It never really packs down for great footing as a normal beach does. The beach drops off abruptly six or eight feet down to where the waves are breaking.

Right at the beginning when we first reached highway 101 there had been an accident sometime before we reached the area where a pickup truck had left the road and struck a building. The vehicle was still there, but the area had been covered with a tarp to keep the wind and rain out of the building.

This section was a great hike -- once we got off of Highway 101. We wore orange safety vests.
