Here’s how to make a tripod in the woods to suspend your pot over a campfire — using only natural materials, no rope or chain needed. I learned this simple but effective method from British bushcraft expert Ray Mears in one of his BBC television series.

Tips:

1. Find three sticks
Look for three sturdy, straight sticks roughly your own height.

2. Find a young, slender branch
You’ll use a “withy” to lash the tripod together. A withy is a flexible, slender branch or shoot — often from willow, hazel, birch, or alder — that can be twisted and bent without breaking. Choose one at least 1 meter long (longer is better), about finger-thickness, with a small side branch at the end that can serve as a hook for hanging your pot.

3. Make the withy flexible
Trim off any small side shoots if necessary. Then, grasp the branch and twist it along its length until the bark starts to pop and the inner fibers loosen. This takes some hand strength and care. Keep twisting until you’re about a hand’s width from the hook — but try not to break the branch!

4. Cut the withy from the tree
Once it’s supple, cut it free, leaving the hook at the end intact.

5. Lash the tripod
Use the thin end of the withy to bind the tops of the three sticks together. I like to start with a clove hitch and finish by bringing the hooked end up through one of the crutches and down again — this locks the lashing and prevents slipping.

6. Set up and adjust the tripod
Place the tripod over your campfire and hang your pot from the hook (make sure your pot has a bail handle). Adjust the height by spreading the legs wider or bringing them closer together.
