The M1 helmet is a classic example of early WWII design. With its fixed bales instead of the later swivel bales, this helmet tells a story of design evolution and frontline necessity. The fixed bale feature, often found on early-war M1 helmets, was replaced mid-war due to practical battlefield issues—mainly, the tendency for bales to break when soldiers sat on them.
