Digital id, social credit, AI … oh my

When psychology officially became a science at Leipzig University in Germany at the end of the 19th century, it was imported to America and coupled with a brand new system of (compulsory) schooling. By the time Silicon Valley had its digital revolution decades later, these underpinnings, rooted in behavioral psychology, were responsible for one of the greatest ironies of human history, which was that the counterculture and their adamantly anti-technocratic core values played a major role in bringing the latest big technology, internet technology, to the mainstream. Also somewhat ironic, at least at the time, was the fact that the use of psychedelic drugs also played an important role in the development of this technology. Today, all of this appears to have dovetailed into what is being called "the fourth industrial revolution.” Who knew?
