Many thanks to Ted and Elaina Spraker for their time and hospitality, ADF&G biologist Heidi Hatcher for her info on caribou wintering behavior, and Pilot Spencer Warren for the flight over the mountains!

Notes:
1) These are not the subspecies known as Mountain Caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) but rather the subspecies known as Barren-Ground Caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti).
2) The state did introduce caribou onto Adak Island in the 50s, but since they were never native to the island, it doesn't qualify as a "reintroduction." Adak caribou have also wreaked havoc on native flora, prompting ongoing proposals to relocate the herd to the mainland, so the introduction wouldn't be categorized as "successful" from an ecological standpoint.
3) There are now three other reintroduced caribou herds on the Kenai Peninsula.
