On June 6, 2023, the Russians deliberately blew up the Kakhovka HPP. This war crime will create a number of huge issues of an ecological, man-made humanitarian nature, which will affect millions.
The explosion at the Kakhovka HPP dam will cause the flooding of dozens, likely hundreds of settlements in Kherson region, where hundreds of thousands of civilians will be affected. The ecological catastrophe that will inevitably occur in the coming days will entail enormous problems with the supply of fresh water to the entire southern part of Ukraine.
Dams are objects protected by wartime laws and the Geneva Convention. Their destruction is an analogue of deploying an indiscriminate weapon of mass destruction. The Russians had planted mines in the dam back in 2022 to thwart a possible counteroffensive by the Armed Forces of Ukraine – and on June 6, 2023, they eventually blew it up.
Before destroying the Kakhovka dam today, the Russians raised the water level to a record 17.5 meters, while leaving the dam gates shut. This was done on purpose – to increase the water pressure and boost the destructive power of the water flow following the blast.
The Russians have committed an act of ecocide approved by Vladimir Putin – the water in the flooded areas will reach a critical level as early as June 6, remaining at this level for several days. Hundreds of thousands of people will be deprived of drinking water. The explosion at the dam will result in multibillion-dollar losses due to the local population losing their real estate and other property. Epidemic waves are expected in flooded areas.
Meanwhile, on social media, the Russians rejoice at the terrorist attack committed by Russian troops, pointing out that Ukraine has other hydropower plants on the Dnipro, which also need to be destroyed – this is proof of the terrorist nature of not only the Russian government, but also Russian society, exalted by propaganda.
The Kakhovka HPP was built in 1958. For 65 years, it has provided fresh water to the entire southern part of Ukraine. The Russians, who traditionally apply the "scorched earth" tactic – that is, destroy everything they cannot contain, on the eve of the Ukrainian counteroffensive blew up the HPP, putting the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians at risk.
The Zaporizhzhia NPP reactors are cooled using water from the Kakhovka Reservoir. Despite the fact that the power plant has emergency tanks for water cooling, it will eventually shut down due to overheating and result in a radioactive disaster, which will affect millions in Ukraine and throughout Europe.
