I first saw this idea in a Pepe Romero masterclass when he asked the student to play to the exit sign at the back of the room instead of to him (as they were sitting quite close to each other), and it transformed the sound, filling the auditorium near instantly.

I’ve been able to replicate this result with students hundreds of times in the decade since attending that masterclass, and I’m still consistently in awe of how beautiful this instrument is, and how much sound it can project.

Don’t ask me the science of it, because that’s not my zone of expertise, but if a little mysticism is inspiring, try playing to a tree outside your window next time to practice and see how your sound changes ✨
