Durante el mes de agosto, después de la época de cosechas tiene lugar el donga, el acontecimiento social más importante del calendario surma. Es un encuentro entre los poblados de la zona, donde los adolescentes de una y otra tribu tienen que demostrar su valentía luchando por parejas con bastones muy largos. Se lucha para demostrar su valentía, por venganzas personales y para ganar a la esposa. El vencedor obtiene el aprecio del poblado al que representa, prestigio social y el aprecio de las chicas jóvenes que muy atentas siguen el acontecimiento. Los participantes, que pueden llegar a ser más de un centenar, luchan por parejas y van quedando eliminados hasta que quedan sólo dos luchadores, de los cuales saldrá el vencedor del torneo.

Mursi, or Mursu or Mun as they refer to themselves, are a Nilotic pastoralist ethnic group in Ethiopia. Their territory of around 2,000 km2 lies in the South Omo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Regional State (SNNPRS), roughly between the Rivers Omo (Warr) and Mago (Mako), close to the border with South Sudan. According to the 2007 national census, there are 7,500 Mursi, 448 of whom live in urban areas. Surrounded by mountains between the Omo River and its tributary the Mago, the home of the Mursi is one of the most isolated regions of the country. Due to the climate, they move twice a year between the winter and summer months. They herd cattle and grow crops along the banks of the Omo River.
