While Americans watched monsters and aliens in the movies and on TV during the Cold War, Russians had a very different experience. When Stalin was still alive, the movies gave Russians a unique and peculiar viewpoint on America and its culture (hint -- they loved it). With the dramatic success of Sputnik, Soviet Space Culture provided an inspirational period of optimism and self-confidence that helped foment peaceful outreach to the West. Its legacy sustains Russian pride and culture to this day.
