𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝗽: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝗼𝘀
Today I want to share a short video I captured by chance during a work trip to the tea plantations of northern Laos.
During my time living in Laos, I discovered that while the climate is perfect for coffee, the beans from the North had a soul of their own. Two years later, I finally stood on the slopes where they grow.
I visited Yod Nam Mut Coffee, a small cooperative started in 2020, supporting 200 families in a remote mountainous region. Here, coffee isn't just a crop; it's a lifeline. The trees are planted within natural forests, requiring years of manual care before they even yield their first harvest.
The Professional Challenge Despite the high quality, this cooperative faces systemic hurdles:
𝐋𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Inaccessible mountain roads, often impassable during the rainy season.
𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬: A lack of official certification procedures for international export.
𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Because these farmers lack access to digital marketing and stable internet, they are often forced to sell their "green gold" at artificially low prices, sometimes barely covering the cost of production.

The Human Perspective Living in Europe or Siberia, we rarely appreciate the "chain of hands" behind our average morning cup. I 𝐬𝐚𝐰 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡—𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝟐𝟎 𝐭𝐨 𝟑𝟎 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞.
𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 "𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐝𝐬" 𝐨𝐫 "𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨𝐬." 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤.
What is the solution? Marketing is a new niche that farmers are just beginning to explore, but they cannot do it alone. The gap between their remote mountains and the global market is wide.
As a videographer and a human being, my role is to tell their story. Perhaps next time you plan a trip, you’ll look beyond the beaches and seek out these mountains. Expanding our understanding of the world is the first step toward valuing the labor that fuels our daily lives.
