Afrika Yaban Köpekleri, Hartbeespoort - Güney Afrika (African Wild Dogs, Hartbeespoort-South Africa)

Afrika yaban köpeği (Lycaon pictus), köpekgiller (Canidae) familyasından Afrika'da yaşayan vahşi bir köpek türü. Temel rengi siyah olmasına rağmen, bütün vücudu kahverengi, sarı, beyaz ve kırmızımsı lekelerle kaplıdır. Post rengi her bireyde farklı dağılım gösterir. Böylelikle hiçbir köpek eşit olarak görünmez. Kürkü kısa, yer yer dökülmüş olduğundan, bazı yerlerinde çıplak et görünebilir. İri ve yuvarlak kulaklı, postu siyah, sarı ve beyaz benekli alacalı, son derece yırtıcı bir hayvandır. Sürü halinde avlanırlar ve kimi zaman avlarını canlı canlı yedikleri olur. Kafası dahil uzunluğu 90 cm'dir. Buna ek olarak 35 cm kuyruk gelir. Yerden omuz yüksekliği 70 cm'dir. Ağırlığı ise yaklaşık 25 Kg tutar. Bu ebatları ile çakal ile kurt arasında bir yer edinir. Zebra, geyik vb. hayvanlar da bu yırtıcı hayvanın avı olabilirler.

The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) also called the African painted dog and the African hunting dog, is a wild canine which is a native species to sub-Saharan Africa. It is the largest wild canine in Africa, and the only extant member of the genus Lycaon, which is distinguished from Canis by dentition highly specialised for a hypercarnivorous diet, and by a lack of dewclaws. It is estimated that about 6,600 adults (including 1,400 mature individuals) live in 39 subpopulations that are all threatened by habitat fragmentation, human persecution, and outbreaks of disease. As the largest subpopulation probably comprises fewer than 250 individuals, the African wild dog has been listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List since 1990. The African wild dog is a highly social animal, living in packs with separate dominance hierarchies for males and females. Uniquely among social carnivores, the females rather than the males disperse from the natal pack once sexually mature.
