We've explored this natural wonder twice, witnessing its transformation from a dry landscape in September 2022 to a stunning oasis in April 2023. During our latest visit, the flowing water was cool, clear, and perfect for swimming, stand up paddleboarding, and pure relaxation.
As you venture into the gorge, you'll be captivated by its wide expanse and ever-changing basalt walls. The patterns and shapes etched into the rock create a visually striking sight that's truly unique. The best part? Copperfield Gorge is easily accessible, with a short walk from the parking area to the gorge itself. Take a moment to admire the covered picnic tables, offering a perfect spot to enjoy a meal surrounded by nature's wonders.
Please note that while exploring the gorge, you'll be walking on uneven terrain, so caution is advised. The surface can get hot, especially during midday, so proper footwear is recommended. As you traverse the walls, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the gorge and its surroundings. For the more adventurous souls, there's an opportunity to descend through a fissure in the rocks and immerse yourself in the refreshing waters below.
If you're planning to bring your furry friends along, fear not! Copperfield Gorge is people and puppy friendly, providing a safe environment for your four-legged companions to join in the fun. We even had our adventurous border collie with us, exploring the waters and embarking on thrilling stand up paddleboarding adventures.
To reach the water with our stand up paddleboards, we carried them over the headland from the car park and descended through a narrow opening to the waiting water. It's a short 5-minute walk from the car to the water's edge, making it convenient for all. If you're looking for a sandy beach area and some shade, venture a bit further along the headland and scramble over some rocks to discover a wide sandy oasis. This secluded spot became our haven, where the puppy party and stand up paddleboarding adventures merged. We took turns exploring the waters and walls of Copperfield Gorge, relishing in the shallow splashes near the beach and venturing into deeper waters as we made our way up the gorge. The small waterfall along the way was an unexpected delight, adding to the magic of the experience.
