Leonid Meteor Shower 2023

Every November, Earth passes through the dust trail of Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. When the particles, which are only a few millimeters in size, hit our earth's atmosphere and burn up, we perceive these tracers as shooting stars. Since the apparent origin of these meteors lies in the constellation Leo (Latin Leo), the meteor shower was named Leonids. The Leonids are extraordinarily fast shooting stars with a speed of up to 72 km/s. The Leonids reach their peak in the morning hours of November 18th, when, under optimal conditions, between 10 and 20 meteors per hour can be seen. Every 33 years, when the parent body has crossed the inner solar system, a so-called meteor storm can occur in the Leonids. Then you can see several hundred or even several thousand meteors per hour. However, this will not be the case again until between 2033 and 2037. I observed the Leonids tonight in the Oldenburg district. The moon set in the early evening and did not interfere with the observations. Although initially some cloud fields and later thick fog made visibility difficult, luckily there were enough starry phases that gave a clear view of the celestial spectacle. If you missed the highlight that night, it's worth taking a look at the sky in the following nights. Because the Leonids are still active until November 30th.
