Pakistan Seeks China's Help to Counter Indian Drones | Republic Defence
Pakistan is reportedly looking to acquire advanced Chinese laser weapons. According to Vice Admiral (Retd) Ahmed Saeed, president of the National Institute of Maritime Affairs, high-energy directed weapons will become increasingly important in modern warfare. Pakistan is interested in integrating such systems with China to strengthen its defense capabilities.
China recently showcased its LY-1 shipborne laser system at the Victory Day Parade in September 2025. The LY-1 is designed to intercept drones, small boats, and potentially missiles, using concentrated laser beams for highly accurate targeting. The turret-mounted design suggests it can also be adapted for land use, making it a flexible and powerful tool for modern militaries.
Directed-energy weapons like the LY-1 are cost-effective compared to traditional missiles because each shot costs only a fraction of conventional interceptors. They work almost instantly, neutralizing targets such as drones or low-flying aircraft with precision, and reducing collateral damage since there is no explosion or shrapnel. China has been developing similar systems for years, including the Silent Hunter and Shen Nung counter-drone systems, while the US Navy has deployed its own 60+ kW HELIOS laser system on destroyers.
Pakistan’s interest in these weapons is part of its long-standing defense partnership with China. The country already operates Chinese aircraft such as the J-10C, which played a role in its brief conflict with India earlier this year. Saeed said that Pakistan seeks deeper integration of hardware and software with China to improve interoperability, especially in modern combat scenarios.
For India, Pakistan’s potential acquisition of laser weapons presents both a challenge and an opportunity. While these systems could make Indian drones and missiles more vulnerable, India is already developing its own directed-energy weapons programs under DRDO, including KALI and other high-power lasers. India’s Air Force and Navy may also adopt advanced tactics, decoys, and hypersonic systems to maintain a strategic edge.
