After years of dreaming of playing in Paris, countless emails to Parisian promoters, Lachy Doley finally saw a glimmer of hope in late 2022. Most of our European tour dates for that year were locked in, but Paris remained elusive. We’d long wanted to play the city that had inspired so many artists before us, but every door we knocked on seemed to shut tight. Just as we were about to give up, a message came through: an offer for the iconic New Morning, a venue steeped in music history. Miles Davis, Prince, and Herbie Hancock had graced its stage, and now it was our turn.

The catch? The only available date was the night of the FIFA World Cup final, and France had made it to the match. It was a potential nightmare—competing with one of the biggest sporting events in world. But it was our shot at Paris, and we weren’t about to let it slip away. We said yes.

The city buzzed with football fever as we loaded into New Morning that evening. The streets outside were electric with anticipation, and we wondered if anyone would show up to watch a blues gig while the nation’s team fought for glory. By kickoff, a few die-hard fans began trickling in, and as France’s fate on the pitch became clear, the trickle turned into a steady flow. By the time the final whistle blew and Paris collectively sighed in heartbreak, New Morning was packed.

What followed was incredible. Perhaps it was the catharsis people needed after the loss, or maybe it was the sheer energy of the room. Either way, the crowd cheered as we launched into our first notes, and the night only grew more electric from there. By the time we finished, the audience was on its feet, cheering like we’d won the final.

That gig was true a reminder of why we do what we do. I left the stage elated and immediately rebooked the venue for almost the same date in 2023. This time, we brought a film crew to capture the energy we knew would come. Even more people turned out, and the show felt like a triumph, cementing Paris as a city we’d never forget. Now, we have that night preserved forever—a dream realized, twice over.
